Chronic Pain Q&A

What is chronic pain?

Pain is important. The sensation of pain helps us to know that we shouldn’t touch a hot pan, when to stop activity due to an injury, or when something heavy is on top of our foot. Without it, we wouldn’t survive long.

For some individuals, though, pain can become a heavy burden to bear. Ordinarily, the pain that we experience goes away as the injury that caused it heals. But when that pain persists for weeks, months, even years after any sign of the injury remains, it can be very debilitating, affecting your everyday life as well as your mental health.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than 3-6 months.

What are the symptoms of chronic pain?

While chronic pain may sound straightforward, each person’s experience with it is different.

For starters, it can show up in any part of your body, from your feet to your head. However, there are certain areas that are more prone to developing chronic pain like the lower back, neck, head, and muscles. And it can take on many forms, including a throbbing sensation, aches, sharp pain, burning, stinging, stiffness, and soreness.

In addition to these painful sensations, chronic pain can also cause you to feel very tired, disrupt your sleep, cause mood changes, create a feeling of weakness or lack of energy, and cause changes in your appetite.

How is chronic pain treated?

Since chronic pain presents differently, treatment options can vary. In contrast to many pain management specialists, the team at Stillpoint Wellbeing Center takes a holistic approach in order to get at the root cause of your chronic pain. They use a variety of methods in order to achieve the best results for each patient.

Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective pain treatment, helping to ease chronic pain in many areas of the body and from many different causes. The team also provides massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, and reiki therapy to those who could benefit from these treatments.
