Acupuncture Q&A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a medical technique developed thousands of years ago in ancient China. It’s based on countless years of wisdom and practice, delivering relief and treatment for a number of medical conditions.

During acupuncture, very thin needles are inserted into specific points on your body to correct physical imbalances. The team at Stillpoint Wellbeing Center provides both traditional Chinese acupuncture and medical acupuncture.

How do Chinese acupuncture and medical acupuncture differ?

While both types of acupuncture involve the insertion of needles into specific acupuncture points, there are differences in the philosophy and treatments between traditional Chinese acupuncture and medical acupuncture.

Chinese acupuncture works on the ancient Chinese system of chi (or qi) energy. Chi energy is known as the life-force energy that flows through various channels in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, when these channels become blocked or stagnant, disease or illness can occur.

Acupuncture facilitates the easy flow of chi energy to restore balance and health to the body. In addition to traditional Chinese acupuncture, the licensed providers at Stillpoint Wellbeing Center also provide complimentary cupping treatments and herbal remedies.

Medical acupuncture combines conventional Western medicine principles with traditional acupuncture methods. Medical acupuncture is done by a licensed physician.

Dr. Tobin completed his medical acupuncture certification at the Helms Medical Institute in Berkeley, California, where he learned how to combine traditional Chinese methods with Western knowledge.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture has long been believed to treat a wide range of conditions. More recently, research has shown these beliefs to be true in many situations. It’s been established that acupuncture can help with chronic pain like lower back pain, osteoarthritis, and neck pain. It also can be helpful for other conditions, including:

  • Tension headaches
  • Migraines
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Pregnancy discomfort
  • Orthopedic injuries like tennis elbow
  • Cancer treatment side effects

The team at Stillpoint Wellbeing Center will work with you to determine if acupuncture can help your condition and devise a detailed plan of care.
